U.S. Prison Labour in Canadian Supply Chains: IHRP Report Launch

Thursday, September 25, 2025
Location:
Room P105 Jackman Law Building 12:30-2pm

Join the International Human Rights Program (IHRP) for a special event for the release of our newest report, Exports & Exploitation: Canadian Goods Tainted by Prison Labour, which investigates how goods made using American prison labour are quietly making their way into Canadian supply chains — despite Canada’s ban on forced labour imports.

Though the U.S. has taken steps to turn away goods produced in China’s Xinjiang region and urged Canada to increase enforcement, there is a glaring blind spot: forced labour within the U.S. itself. Often described as “modern day slavery,” prison labour is especially pressing today with the shifting U.S.-Canada trade relationship and ongoing tariff threats.

This event will feature a panel discussion with formerly incarcerated workers and prisoners’ rights advocates, along with IHRP summer fellows who traveled to Alabama to investigate prison labour practices firsthand.

Lunch will be served.
