Imprisoning people for long periods of time without trial is a violation of the Uganda Constitution and international human rights law, finds Avocats Sans Frontières (ASF) and the IHRP in a joint report released today. The report, Presumed Innocent, Behind Bars: The Problem of Lengthy Pre-trial Detention in Uganda, was authored by two University of Toronto law students enrolled in the IHRP clinic and is based on empirical analysis of the situation in eight Ugandan prisons. The report calls on the Ugandan government to take urgent action to address this major problem in the justice system.
