Special Rapporteur James AnayaThe Faculty of Law’s International Human Rights Program (IHRP) and Aboriginal Law Program (ALP) are pleased to announce a unique new partnership with James Anaya, the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, which will allow one Faculty of Law student to intern with the Special Rapporteur over the summer, and possibly participate in a field mission related to his mandate.

To assist the UN Human Rights Council with its upcoming review of Canada, the IHRP has submitted a "shadow report" that highlights ongoing rights violations against women with mental health issues imprisoned in Canadian penitentiaries. A copy of the IHRP's submission is available here.

Faculty’s International Human Rights Program Matches Students with Mentors in the Field 

As part of its award-winning legal clinic, the International Human Rights Program (IHRP) has launched a new mentorship program that matches upper year and graduate students with leading human rights professionals. 

The IHRP mentorship program builds on the success of the Faculty’s alumni mentorship program and recognizes the tremendous value of mentoring relationships, especially in the competitive field of international human rights law.

UN Slams Canada's Treatment of Mentally Ill Prisoners

June 1, 2012 - In recommendations released earlier today, the UN Committee against Torture slammed Canada’s treatment of prisoners with mental health issues. The Committee recommends that Canada increase the capacity of mental health treatment centres, abolish the use of solitary confinement for persons with serious or acute mental health issues, and otherwise ensure that solitary confinement is limited and subject to judicial oversight.
