In a recent session of the Canadian Senate discussing the need for improved mental health treatment for inmates, Senator Mobina Jaffer cited the IHRP’s report in a speech outlining the serious problems faced by federally-sentenced women with mental health issues.
Cruel, Inhuman and Degrading? Canada’s Treatment of Federally-Sentenced Women with Mental Health Issues, authored by students Elizabeth Bingham (3L) and Rebecca Sutton (3L), concludes that the Correctional Service’s treatment of female prisoners with serious mental health issues is discriminatory, violates the rights to liberty and security of person, access to justice, and health, and in some circumstances constitutes cruel, inhuman and degrading treatment.
