Honduras enacts new mechanism to protect journalists

June 13, 2014 - A few short months after the release of the IHRP and PEN Canada's report, Honduras: Journalism in the Shadow of Impunity, the Honduran government has enacted new legilsation aimed at protecting journalists.  Read about the new protection mechanism.  Since the law has not passed yet, the IHRP does not have a position on whether or not this will be a positive step.

IHRP Files Petition against Canada for delay of over 13 years in processing immigration application

April 28, 2014 – Today, the IHRP filed a petition with the United Nations Human Rights Committee on behalf of Suleyman Goven, a Canadian citizen who arrived as Convention refugee from Turkey over 20 years ago. Goven who claims that Canada violated his rights under the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights for the mishandling of his application for permanent residence over the course of more than 13 years.  Three law students, Malorie, Malone, Katherine MacDonald, and Marianne Salih assisted with the petition through the IHRP legal clinic.

April 9, 2014 - Today, John Ralston Saul, President of PEN International, authored an opinion piece in the Ottawa Citizen that referenced the IHRP-PEN Report Honduras: Journalism in the Shadow of Impunity and supported the IHRP's calls for Canada to include human rights conditionalities in any final free trade agreement with Honduras.  Read his piece here.

(TORONTO, April 9, 2014) – The IHRP and PEN Canada will call on officials to tie human rights obligations to Canada’s proposed free trade agreement with Honduras during a committee appearance in Ottawa tomorrow, April 10, 2014 at 11 a.m.

The Canada-Honduras Free Trade Agreement was signed by the current government on Nov. 5, 2013, but must be debated and voted upon by Parliament before it becomes Canadian law. The House of Commons Standing Committee on International Trade will make recommendations to assist Parliament in its deliberations.
