Three new SOGI reports posted

The IHRP's Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity (SOGI) Working Group provides country-specific research support to lawyers representing LGBT refugee claimants. This year's group has just released three new reports on country conditions for LGBT persons in Chile, Estonia and Russia.

The IHRP, along with the David Asper Centre for Constitutional Rights, the Native Women's Association of Canada, the Canadian Association of Elizabeth Fry Societies, and the DisAbled Women's Network Canada, has filed a submission with the UN Special Rapporteur on the Rights of Indigneous Peoples in advance of his official visit to Canada from October 7 to 15. This submission builds on the earlier work of the IHRP and its partners on human rights violations in Canada's federal prison system.

Supreme Court of Canada rejects "guilt-by-association" approach to complicity

This morning, the Supreme Court of Canada unanimously rejected a "guilt-by-association" approach to complicity in international crime in Ezokola v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration, 2013 SCC 40. The IHRP intervened in this case with the Canadian Centre for International Justice, and argued that there is no "complicity by association" under modern international criminal law.

International Commission of Jurists and IHRP launch innovative legal database

Today the International Commission of Jurists (ICJ) launched on its website the Sexual Orientation & Gender Identity Legislative Database, a collaboration between the ICJ and the IHRP. The Legislative Database is the result of a year-long pilot project. Students in the 2012-2013 SOGI Working Group, led by Azeezah Kanji (3L) and Hayley Ha (2L), gathered and analyzed laws from 24 countries from all regions of the world. Each country is introduced with a legislative overview prepared by the student researchers.

The Globe and Mail is reporting today on a landmark decision out of the High Court of Kenya in the "160 Girls" litigation, which was launched by IHRP partner Equality Effect and two Kenyan NGOs, the Federation of Women Lawyers and Ripples International Women's Shelter. This case was brought on behalf of women and girls seeking meaningful enforcement of Kenya's rape laws.

The UN Human Rights Council undertakes its Universal Periodic Review of Canada's human rights record this Friday, and it will have before it the IHRP's "shadow report" highlighting ongoing rights violations in Canada's federal prison system. The Universal Periodic Review allows for an assessment of the human rights record of every UN member state, once every four years. New York -- The global edition of the IHRP-Plan International report on school-related gender-based violence was launched yesterday at an event at UNICEF House in New York. A girl's right to learn without fear was a side-event related to the current meeting of the 57th session of the United Nation's Commission on the Status of Women.
