The 191 member states of the UN spoke loud and clear this week and we should heed their message: Canada is not living up to its historic reputation as a leader on human rights. With hard work and a bi-partisan approach, however, Canada can re-define its failed bid for a seat on the Security Council not as a loss but as an opportunity to recommit to its core values.

Mexico is one of the most dangerous countries in the world to work as a journalist, particularly those working for newspapers. Organized crime groups, particularly drug cartels, are responsible for much of the violence, and for an estimated three out of every 10 attacks against journalists. As a result, those reporting on crime and drug trafficking are particularly at risk.

This year, the International Human Rights Program at the Faculty of Law sent nearly 20 students around the world to work with partner organizations focused on the protection and promotion of international human rights. Three interns, Lauren Rock, Heather Burnett, and Amanda Montague, worked with organizations in Kenya, Ireland, and Canada, respectively, to advance the human rights of women.
