Mandhane and Cheung in Globe and Mail: Judges should be overseeing solitary confinement

In an opinion published on page A11 of today’s Globe and Mail, IHRP executive director Renu Mandhane and Carmen Cheung, senior counsel at the British Columbia Civil Liberties Association, argue that solitary confinement in Canadian prisons must be subject to judicial oversight.

Latest case of long-term segregation 'troubling': says Mandhane to Whitehorse Daily Star

In a story that ran today in the Whitehorse Daily Star, IHRP Executive Director, Renu Mandhane, is quoted extensively regarding the use of indefinite solitary confinement to deal with prisoners with mental health issues.  The article details the case of Michael Nehass, 31, who is currently before the Yukon courts on various criminal charges, and who has been allegedly kept in solitary confinement for approximately one year and nine months.

IHRP lands prestigious Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize for its work to end discrimination

The Faculty of Law’s International Human Rights Program (IHRP) is the winner of the 2015 Ludwig and Estelle Jus Memorial Human Rights Prize for its groundbreaking work to end discrimination against women and sexual minorities. IHRP director, Renu Mandhane, and faculty advisory committee chair, Professor Audrey Macklin, will accept the award on the IHRP’s behalf at a formal presentation ceremony on April 13, 2015 at Isabel Bader Theatre in Toronto.
