The International Human Rights Program (IHRP) has received a $75,000 grant from the Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF) to launch a project exposing the negative impact of Canada’s refugee policies on some of the world’s most vulnerable claimants—people with HIV or at-risk of HIV due to rampant violence, discrimination based on sexual orientation, and gender-based violence.

26 November 2014 - The IHRP learned today that it, along with its partners the Canadian Centre for International Justice and MiningWatch Canada, have been granted permission to present oral argument before the Supreme Court of Canada in Yaiguaje v. Chevron.  The IHRP will be represented by a team of UofT alumni, Murray Klippenstein, Cory Wanless, and IHRP director, Renu Mandhane.  IHRP clinic students Alison Mintoff and James Rendell provided invaluable research on this file and will be in attendance at the Court.

Mandhane op-ed in Globe and Mail: Access to Information Search Fees a Violation of Freedom of Expression

13 November 2014 - Today, the Globe and Mail has published an op-ed by IHRP Director, Renu Mandhane, on unreasonable search fees when attempting to access Canadian government documents.  She argues that such fees are a violation of the right to freedom of expression guaranteed in international law.  The op-ed was republished in the Huffington Post.

22 October 2014 - In a feature published today by Al Jazeera, IHRP director Mandhane discusses the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in Kazemi: "In the end, the direction from the court was to go back to parliament to amend the SIA [State Immunity Act], and I really do hope that this decision will mobilise Canadians." Globe and Mail profiles IHRP intervention in Chevron case

20 October 2014 - The Globe and Mail today published an article profiling the IHRP, MiningWatch Canada, and Canadian Centre for International Justice's intervention before the Supreme Court of Canada in the Chevron case.  IHRP Director Mandhane is quoted as to the significance of the case: "“I think more and more the courts are going to have to grapple with this transnational world, where citizens and corporations are working and travelling all over the place, and how is Canada going to deal with that when things go badly,” she said in an interview.
