Supreme Court of Canada should not impose additional hurdles for Indigenous peoples harmed by transnational corporations trying to access justice

October 20, 2014 – On Friday, the International Human Rights Program at the University of Toronto Faculty of Law (IHRP), MiningWatch Canada (MiningWatch) and the Canadian Centre for International Justice (CCIJ), filed their factum with the Supreme Court of Canada in Yaiguaje et al. v. Chevron.  The joint interveners provided the Court with submissions on the proper interpretation of private international law and corporate law principles in light of the international law obligation to provide effective remedies for human rights violations.

Supreme Court misses opportunity to bring Canadian law in line with international obligations to victims of torture

In a disappointing decision released this morning, the Supreme Court of Canada has barred civil claims for torture committed by a foreign state, even where the victim is a Canadian citizen.

In July 2003, Zahra Kazemi, a Canadian citizen and journalist, died in Iran. She had been arrested for taking photographs of protestors in front of Evin prison in Tehran and, while in detention, was beaten, raped and tortured by Iranian government officials.  She died as a result of injuries sustained.

Canada required to respond to IHRP complaint to UN Human Rights Committee

12 September 2014 - Today, the IHRP received notice from the UN Human Rights Committee that it has accepted the IHRP's complaint submitted on behalf of Suleyman Goven. According to the Committee's Rules of Procedure, Canada now has 6 months to respond to Goven's complaint. We are pleased to have passed the first hurdle in ensuring accountability for rights violations against Goven outlined in our submissions to the Committee.

11 September 2014 - Today, the Director of the IHRP, Renu Mandhane, discussed the excessive use of solitary confinement in federal correctional facilities with Peter Sheldon of CBC Radio Yellowknife. CBC Yellowknife recently learned that some prisoners in the Yellowknife North Slave Correctional Centre were spending up to 8 months in solitary confinement.
